The sector of information and communication technologies is a key area for the elaboration of innovative Smart City solutions: Vienna makes available a wide range of open government data and supports the development of innovative applications for public use in various fields, such as energy, health, culture, environment, transport and housing. As measured by the current objectives, Vienna is making good progress – the challenge lies in the ongoing adjustment of the strategy to keep pace with rapid technological change.

Vienna provides a variety of open government data and supports the development of innovative applications for citizens in various fields such as energy, health, culture, environment, transport or housing. By the end of 2016 alone 210 applications had been registered via the official portal data.gv.at – more than twice as many as in 2014. The City of Vienna’s “Digital City” initiative acts as a motor for the initiation of pilot projects in cooperation between the city and IT-companies. The full expansion of the public WLAN network is also largely completed: So far, 425 hotspots have been set up.
