The structure presented here and the underlying objectives follow the resolution of the Smart City Wien Framework Strategy 2019.
A secure, affordable energy supply is and remains one of the most important prerequisites for the city’s high quality of life and economic development. At the same time, Vienna’s energy system requires radical transformation in order to reduce CO2 emissions. Massive investments are therefore being made to improve energy efficiency throughout the entire system, from power generation to distribution to end consumers. The urban energy supply is in the midst of a continuous transition from fossil fuels to renewables.
Objectives in the area Energy Supply:
- Vienna’s level of energy security remains high.
- Vienna has smart energy grids that allow a decentralised, renewables-based energy supply.
- Renewable energy production in the metropolitan area doubles between 2005 and 2030.
- In 2030 30%, and in 2050 70% of Vienna’s final energy consumption originates from renewable sources.
