Vienna’s information and communication technology (ICT) sector accounts for one quarter of the added value created in the city, employs a quarter of its workforce, and is growing faster than the private sector as a whole. This makes it the most forward-looking, promising and innovative pillar of the Viennese economy. DigitalCity.Wien, an independent, non-profit initiative by the City of Vienna and Vienna’s ICT sector, showcases Vienna’s digital expertise on the national and international stage and supports the city on its way to becoming the digital capital of Europe. In line with Vienna’s policy of inclusion, people are at the very centre of this digital transformation. After all, digitalisation is only successful if it takes account of the needs of ICT users.
Making Vienna a digital capital
ICT must be equally accessible to all and equally usable by all, regardless of age, gender and ethnicity. DigitalCity.Wien therefore promotes digital skills in all sectors of education and training with the aim of remedying the shortage of skilled specialists and inspiring more people, particularly women, to take up careers in IT. The various DigitalCity.Wien events and platforms provide networking opportunities and forums for exchange among IT experts, members of the public, policy-makers and the corporate sector. This gives rises to exciting new projects that maintain Vienna’s success as a location for the ICT sector and make it even more attractive for the future.
The basis of a Smart City
ICT is the basis of a Smart City, a cross-cutting issue that impacts upon all other spheres of life. A state-of-the-art ICT infrastructure benefits the citizens of Vienna in areas such as energy, mobility, health and transport. Innovation and digitalisation therefore play a leading role the Smart City Wien Framework Strategy – always hand in hand with measures to improve quality of life and conserve resources.
