More than 500 open data sets are currently available on the servers of the municipal administration. To date, they have been used to develop more than 300 software applications. From apps to help people with public transport or parking, to visualisations of complex statistics and geodata, to useful tools for tourists and everyday life, the data have yielded an array of different innovations. Open data creates transparency and is an important resource to drive innovation in the digital age. Through smart use of their municipal data, cities can help innovators such as local small- and medium-sized enterprises to develop new products and services and thus add value to the regional economy. The City of Vienna is thus one of Europe’s pioneers in the field of open government data (OGD).

A diverse range of data

The City of Vienna is committed to greater transparency, participation and cooperation with local people and the business and scientific communities, which is why it has made local government data and services available to the public. OGD comprises data and services of the municipal administration which are not subject to data protection legislation and do not pertain to critical infrastructure. Both the municipal administration and the scientific and business communities can use open government data to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of their work. Low-threshold access to open data also enables local start-ups and/or research institutions to create innovative solutions at comparatively low cost and without a great deal of risk.

The open data community

As a Smart City, Vienna is working to continuously expand its portfolio of open data and cultivate its productive use in the local economy. Regular meetings on the subject of open data include the City of Vienna’s quarterly open government platforms, the Vienna Open Data Meetups hosted by Open Knowledge Austria, and a host of other networking events.  The City of Vienna also plays an active role in the national forum Cooperation OGD Austria and in the international German-speaking forum Cooperation OGD D-A-CH-LI. In future, autonomous cities will be required to leverage all forms of modern data management (open data, data commons and protected, non-open data and data cooperations with third parties) for the benefit of their citizens, an objective that is fully in line with the goals of the Smart City Wien Framework Strategy.
