The Smart Campus is the new headquarter of Wiener Netze. The building combines smart building technology, photovoltaic modules and passive house standards. It thus provides a smart and environmentally friendly workplace for 1,400 employees.
Since summer 2016, the new headquarters of Wiener Netze (Vienna Networks), the Smart Campus, offers a new workplace to around 1,400 employees. The decision to build a completely new building and the centralization of the company was preceded by numerous investigations: the renovation of the previous buildings was not feasible, the centralization of the 10 company branches under one roof brought not only logistical advantages but also environmental benefits.
Wiener Netze as an energy saving role model
Apart from the reduction of the travel costs and emissions generated by traffic between the individual locations, the new office building also saves energy. From the planning stage, the multifunctional building complex, which combines offices and workshops, has ensured sustainability and energy efficiency. The “Smart Campus”, built according to passive house standards, is as a result of its 1,200 photovoltaic modules, air-conditioning from groundwater use and solar thermal energy as well as over 10,000 energy-efficient LED luminaires almost energy-self-sufficient. The Smart Campus is thus one of the world’s largest low-energy houses with passive house construction worldwide!
Smart technology
In modern office buildings, the possibility of intervention of users in energy saving measures is not possible, or only to a very limited extent. The Smart Campus combines energy-saving automatisms and comfortable use with a smart user feedback. This intelligent house technology is intended to save operating costs, in particular energy costs, and to reduce energy and CO2-emissions. In addition, the employees are left with sufficient space to make the individual workplace as comfortable as possible.
The lifeline of the city
Wiener Netze provides approximately 2 million people daily with electricity, gas and district heating. The entire energy flow of these lifelines, which extend from Vienna via Lower Austria to Burgenland, is monitored and regulated by Wiener Netze. More precisely, in the load distribution system of the Smart Campus, which is one of the largest and most modern of its kind. The energy supply centre thus essentially contributes to supply security – which is with 99.9% one of the highest in Europe.
Smart – already during construction!
The smart and sustainable building was already sustainable during the construction phase. About 270,000 tons of excavation material resulted from the construction site. A part of this could be transported by rail via the adjacent Ostbahn. This saved approximately 55 tons of CO2 and half a ton of nitrogen oxides. The residents also benefitted from the transportation by rail: 6,000 truck journeys could be avoided and thus neighbouring residents had to endure a lot less noise and dust.
